DTF Transfer

DTF FAQ

04 Mar 2024

What is a DTF transfer?

Direct to Film (DTF) transfers are a type of heat transfer that involves printing a design onto a film then transferring it onto a surface using heat and pressure. The DTF transfer utilizes the latest technology in printing to deliver stunningly vibrant, full-color transfers with excellent durability. This method is different from other ways of printing such as silk-screening, as it doesn’t require any chemicals or an array of equipment. Instead, it uses a specially designed printer and transfer film.

Can you print DTF on a regular printer?

While the concept may sound straightforward, the DTF process doesn't lend itself to regular printers. The idea of printing images onto a clear film and then transferring them onto fabric may sound simply enough, yet the reality is that regular household printers aren't cut out for this job. They don't have the ability to handle the DTF inks or the specialty transfer films used. The technology for DTF printing involves using white ink and color ink simultaneously, something most regular printers simply cannot do.

How long do DTF transfers last?

One of the most significant benefits of DTF transfers is durability. Regarding the longevity of DTF transfers, it typically comes down to the quality of the ink used, the transfer process, and how the product is cared for afterward. With high-quality inks and proper transfer methods, the DTF transfers are known to last dozens of washes while maintaining image integrity. Furthermore, if the fabric is cared for properly – avoiding aggressive washing and dry cleaning – the prints can last even longer, delivering a product with remarkable durability and longevity.

What type of printer do you need for DTF transfers?

Now that it's clear DTF transfers can't be done using conventional printers, what kind of printer do you need? A dedicated DTF printer is crucial in achieving high-quality results. Printers specifically designed for DTF printing like Epson's SureColor printers are equipped with the technology to handle the precise ink work required in DTF transfers. The printer's ability to lay down white ink as a base before applying the colors is fundamental in producing vibrant, colorful images that last. To put it as simply as possible, anyone looking to endeavor into the DTF transfer process should invest in a dedicated DTF printer.

These printers are meant to handle the specific nuances of DTF printing, including the use of special inks and films. By investing in the necessary equipment – from the printer itself to high-quality inks –, you are making sure that the DTF transferring process is conducted as seamlessly as possible, resulting in a high-quality, highly durable end product.
